Borrowing Privileges

Library borrowing privileges are extended to:

• Current Northeastern undergraduate students (from all Northeastern campuses)
• Current Northeastern graduate students (from all Northeastern campuses)
• Current Northeastern faculty & staff (from all Northeastern campuses)
• Northeastern Faculty Emeriti
• Northeastern Alumni

A valid Husky ID card is required for borrowing materials.

Marymount Manhattan College alumni are unable to check books out of the library.

Loan Periods and Renewals

Loan periods vary by material type:

• Books:
  • Faculty: 90 days, new books 28 days
  • Staff, students, and alums: 28 days
  • All users are able to renew items up to 3 times, unless the title has been requested by another user. You can renew or place a hold on a item using your Library Account.
• Periodicals: 7 days, no renewals
• Course reserve items: 3 hours in-library use only. Reserve items cannot be renewed.
• Interlibrary Loans: Loan periods vary depending on the policies of the lending library. The due date can be found in the email sent when an item is ready for pick up.

Interlibrary Loan

InterLibrary Loan (ILL) is a free service for current students, faculty, and staff. Patrons may request materials not available in the library through Interlibrary Loan. In most cases, requests can be filled within seven to ten days although a larger number of requests may take longer to process. Loan periods and renewal policies for ILL materials are determined by the lending library. To place an ILL request for an article or book, please visit the Interlibrary Loan Article Request or Interlibrary Loan Book Request form, depending on your needs.

Access to the Thomas J. Shanahan Archives

Access to the Thomas J. Shanahan Archives are available for in-library use only. Access requires prior arrangement with library staff. Contact [email protected] for further information.

Visiting & Borrowing from Other Libraries

New York Public Library

Students attending Northeastern University - New York City are eligible to apply for a free New York Public Library card. Access high-quality online resources such as research guides and databases, digital collections, digital research books, and the archives portal to supplement your research. A library card also grants access to print and digital books and magazines as well as audiobooks for leisure.

There are two ways to get a New York Public Library card:

1. Apply online at nypl.org/help/library-card to obtain a digital card, which gives instant access to online resources. Then, stop by any NYPL branch with the required documents to obtain a physical card.
2. Go directly to any NYPL branch with the required documents to obtain a physical card.

Acquiring a physical card is highly recommended as it allows a cardholder to borrow physical books and use Culture Pass.

Acceptable proofs of identity:

An applicant must bring two documents: one document showing a connection to New York State and one document showing proof of address. Below are some acceptable documents:

Proof of your New York State connection (choose one):

• Employment in New York State:
  • Employment letter, pay stub, or contract
• Enrollment at a New York State institution:
  • Registration, bursar’s receipt, student ID, or enrollment letter

Proof of address (choose one):

• Driver’s license or state ID
• Utility bill
• Bank or credit card statement
• Official government letter
• Lease, mortgage statement, or rental agreement
• Property tax bill or statement
