The Northeastern University Libraries have recently become the newest member of the HathiTrust, a collaborative partnership of over 60 research libraries worldwide. The goal of this partnership is to build and preserve a trusted, comprehensive digital library of the shared member collections for long-term curation and access.

Immediate benefits of this membership to our faculty are the following:

  • Ability to view and download approximately 4 million public-domain materials and materials for which HathiTrust has received permissions
  • Ability to search and selectively display text from the 8 million digitized volumes still in copyright
  • Ability for users to create virtual collections of volumes held in the repository
  • Specialized access to public domain and in-copyright materials for users with disabilities

The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) enables computational access for nonprofit and educational users to published works in the public domain and, in the future, on limited terms to works in-copyright from the HathiTrust

Will Wakeling, Dean of Libraries at Northeastern University, commented on this new partnership: “The Library is pleased to be participating in and supporting this important collaborative initiative which is vital for the preservation and future of research, as well as allowing us to provide enhanced discovery and access services to our users.”

HathiTrust was named for the Hindi word for elephant, hathi, symbolic of the qualities of memory, wisdom and strength represented by elephants. HathiTrust is funded and governed by members of the partner libraries. Over the past several years, the partners have contributed more than 11 million volumes to the digital library, digitized by the Internet Archive, Google and in-house initiatives.

The Northeastern University Library is realizing an ambitious vision to expand its digital initiatives by developing its digital repository, digitizing unique collections, constructing integrated collaborative spaces, and fostering the adoption of digital media and the creation of new knowledge.
