Using Snell Library

Snell Library Access

While Snell Library undergoes renovations, spaces will be in flux, and certain spaces will not be accessible for use. In order to preserve as much seating and study space as possible, access during the renovation is available to current Northeastern University students, faculty and staff with a valid Husky Card only.

Noise

We ask that members of the Northeastern community respect the rights of others to study in Snell Library throughout the building and limit disruptive behavior. Disruptive devices, such as music or video players with headphones that leak sound, should not be used in the library. Disruptive patrons may be asked to leave the building by Library staff. 

The Library has designated Room 490 on the fourth floor for Silent Study. We ask that in this space, patrons refrain from talking, making or receiving phone calls, watching videos without headphones or otherwise distracting those looking for silent study space.  

Those who wish to work in groups should please be mindful of others working in their immediate area. Group Study Rooms can be booked in advance. Other library spaces available to be reserved can be found on the rooms and spaces page. Spaces can also be reserved throughout campus through Spaces at Northeastern. 

Responsible Conduct

Responsible conduct is expected of all persons who use the University Library. People who engage in inappropriate, abusive, or disruptive behaviors will be asked to leave.

  • Bicycles, scooters, and any type of motorized vehicle with the exception of mobility aids are not allowed inside Snell Library.
  • The use of skates, skateboards, scooters, and bicycles inside Snell Library, on its loggia, or on the steps and ramps leading to it is prohibited for your safety and that of others.
  • The use or charging of hoverboards is not permitted in Snell Library per the Northeastern University Police Department.
  • Animals other than service dogs individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, are not permitted in the Snell Library.
  • Smoking is prohibited in accordance with University Policy, in any area of the Snell Library building or in any unit of the University Library, as well as on the steps and loggia of Snell Library. Failure to comply will result in referral to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.

Food

Food is allowed throughout Snell Library except in spaces that prohibit it, such as the Recording Studios or the Archives.

Food deliveries cannot be left with proctors at the Access Point on the first floor of Snell Library.

Security gates

Snell Library has a security gate at its exit. If its alarm goes off as you are exiting, please present all books, laptops, and bags for inspection when asked to do so. This will help us determine why the alarm sounded.

Mutilation or unauthorized removal of library material, furnishings or property is a violation of Massachusetts State Law (Chapter 266, sections 99 and 100). All such incidents will be reported to the Campus Police. If such an incident involves a student, a report may also be made to the Dean of Students, who may subsequently refer the matter to Northeastern’s Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR). Northeastern University Code of Student Conduct is available on OSCCR’s web site.

Lost & Found

Please keep your personal possessions in view. Do not leave them unattended or as a means of reserving space. Found items will be held for 30 days. Food items, however, will be disposed of immediately. Library staff are not responsible for unattended items.

The items listed below are turned over to the Northeastern University’s Public Safety Division. Public Safety will contact owners when possible. They may be picked up at the Northeastern University Police Department – 716 Columbus Avenue Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. These items include:

  • Bank cards or credit cards
  • Car keys
  • Cash
  • Cell phones and mobile devices
  • Computers
  • Government ID (licenses, passports)
  • Jewelry
  • Prescription medications
  • Wallets and purses
  • Northeastern University Husky Cards (These are kept at the Access Point at the Library’s entrance)
