Students and Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity staff pose in front of a bus, 1976

In 1966, the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) was founded to help eliminate racial imbalance through voluntary school desegregation by busing African-American children from Boston and Springfield to suburban public schools.  Above, a group of students and METCO staff pose in front of a bus in 1976.  Photograph from the METCO Records (M101).
