Collections Will Be Moving on Level Four Today
Snell Library Collection Move – Fall 2017/Winter 2018 – Status Updates
As announced by Provost James Bean and Dean of Libraries Dan Cohen earlier this fall, Snell library staff will be creating additional study and other space in the library by moving lesser-used parts of the print collection to an offsite Library Annex. Read the whole announcement here.
We will update this page regularly with status updates and apologize in advance for any disruption or inconvenience you may experience during this project.
Start date for moving materials to the Library Annex:
Work will begin on Monday, December 18th. No work is scheduled during holiday break when the Library is closed. Work will resume on Tuesday, January 2nd.
Preliminary timeline for moving materials to the Library Annex:
This is a preliminary timeline for when materials will be moved off Levels Three and Four of the library, although dates will change. The project is expected to span late December through the end of March. Signs on Levels Three and Four will indicate which areas are closed that day/week based on where the workers are located.
PLEASE NOTE: During work hours (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM), Levels Three and Four will no longer be considered quiet/silent. It is a priority to regain silent/quiet study spaces on both floors as soon as the project is completed. There will also be times when materials are in transit and will not be available for use. We will be glad to request items via interlibrary loan as they are needed.
Level Four – move off materials going to Library Annex
Level Four – move microform cabinets to Snell basement
Level Three – move off materials going to Library Annex; move all media (e.g., CD’s, DVD’s) to a separate section on 3rd floor
Level Three – consolidate and shift remaining materials
Level Four – move Favat Children's Collection and Reference Collection to designated sections on 3rd floor
Level Four – move remaining materials to 3rd floor and shelve them
Lower Level – move off materials going to Library Annex and remaining journals
Finding, requesting and picking up materials:
Finding and requesting items from the Library Annex: Materials in the Library Annex will be displayed in Scholar OneSearch with the location of Snell Library Annex. Once you sign in with your Northeastern username and password, you will see a Request button for the item. You can use this to request that an item be retrieved from the Library Annex for your use.
Please consult with library staff at the Help and Information Desk for any questions or special needs. Faculty will also be able to request rush service at the desk.
Picking up your items: Requested items will be delivered to Snell Library by van on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They must be requested by noon on the day before the delivery. You will be notified when the requested item(s) are available for pick-up at the Help and Information Desk.
Timeline for changes to library spaces:
April, after Final Exams: shelving dismantled on Level Four; additional work on floors/rugs; additional seating added after work is completed.
In addition to expanded study space, plans for future library spaces include a new graduate study/collaboration area, researcher support services, new location for University Archives, and much more. We’re not sure yet about the timing of all this, but stay tuned for announcements about how and when we will solicit input from the University community!
